Choosing Your Bathroom Vanity

Design inspiration for bathrooms often starts with a specific feel you want for the space; perhaps a serene outdoor tranquil setting or a relaxing spa. No matter where the design idea starts, your bathroom vanity is an important element, both in style and function.

A vanity not only holds the sink but in some bathrooms also serves as the storage for toiletries, accessories, and linens. You want to make sure that your vanity has the features to keep your bathroom organized and the space to hold the things you need it to hold.

As you work with one our team members at Ovation Design-Build, you will be asked many questions to help determine the right vanity for you. Because the vanity has so many purposes, there is a lot more that goes into choosing the right one than just the cabinet style and color. Of course, some choices will be limited by space available but beyond that, here are some considerations that we’ll take into account in your bathroom vanity design:

  • Mounting options and height – Bathroom vanities either sit on the floor like your kitchen cabinets, on legs like a dresser, or are wall mounted. Each one gives a different look to the space. Most vanities are between 34-35” in height, although your height or physical limitations may influence the counter height you desire.
  • Sink and countertop – Your sink and countertop are essential parts of your vanity. As you decide what countertop you want, you’ll also need to choose a sink mounting placement and style. If your bathroom has only one sink, you don’t necessarily need to put it in the middle of the counter. Your sink mounting style will also influence your faucet choice.
  • Finishes – Finish refers to both the color and the type of finish that protects the wood. When choosing a color for your cabinets, keep in mind that the darker the wood, the smaller the space may feel. If your design inspiration is influenced by a particular piece of tile or countertop, make sure the colors work together to keep the overall feel you’re looking to establish. The topcoat of your bathroom cabinets should be something that stands up to the damp environment of a bathroom. Even if this is a half bath, there is still moisture that the cabinets will need to contend with regularly.
