Granite Countertops
The most popular choice today remains granite. The benefits of granite are the many patterns and colors available, the general durability, and the sanitary nature because it is non-porous. This natural stone is heat resistant so you can place a just out of the oven pan on it without worrying about damage. The primary drawback of granite is the need to re-seal it every few years and the fact that some granite is expensive. The resealing is part of the maintenance but does keep it from staining. Some homeowners undergoing a large kitchen remodel may also dislike the fact that the slabs are generally about 5’X8’ and they need multiple slabs with slightly different patterns. Granite is seen as a selling point should you decide to sell your home.
Quartz Countertops
Quartz has grown in popularity over the past decade. It never needs to be sealed and is naturally non-porous. Quartz countertops are man-made primarily out of quartzite and resin. The pattern of quartz is consistent throughout the counter area so you can choose from a small sample and have confidence the entire piece will look the same. Cost is about the same as some of the higher priced granite. The biggest drawback to quartz is the fact it is not heat resistant. You can’t set a hot pot on it without causing damage. In a bathroom, hair straighteners and curling irons have been known to leave marks.
Marble Countertops
Marble, especially Carrara marble, is a beautiful natural stone. Carrara is white or pale greyish blue in color and desired by many homeowners because of its historic beauty. We can’t argue with marble’s beauty or timelessness but there are many drawbacks. Marble is extremely porous and there isn’t a finish process that prevents staining or scratching. If you are considering this as part of your kitchen remodel, you will have to be meticulous in cleaning. Some common cooking ingredients can even corrode the surface. Makeup can stain your bathroom countertops and harsh cleaners can corrode it.
