The Beauty of Hidden kitchen appliances

June 13, 2017 by Sandy Hendricks Leave a Comment

Appliance docks were once one of the most popular upgrades in kitchen remodeling because they allowed you to create a clean look in your kitchen. Hiding those small appliances and giving them a home kept your kitchen neat and organized. More recently, an even more popular option has emerged with hidden appliances. Your dishwasher, refrigerator, and trash compactor can look just like the cabinets in your kitchen, hiding them in plain sight.

This trend continues to grow as homeowners want to keep a consistent look in their kitchens. When a modern appliance stands out against a country French style kitchen or an ultra-modern one, the illusion breaks. Hidden appliances help maintain the look and feel you want in your remodeled kitchen.

Overlay Versus Integrated

You can choose one of two methods for your hidden appliances – overlay or integrated. An overlay is exactly as it sounds. The matching cabinet front is installed on top of the appliance. This only works on appliances intended to have an overlay. These match your cabinets but still look like appliances. An integrated cabinet appliance is one that becomes part of your cabinets. It blends in seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. Typically, refrigerators of this design are cabinet depth.

Things to Consider Before You Install Cabinet Facing on Your Appliances

The first consideration is that your existing appliances may or may not be able to have a cabinet front installed. If you’re remodeling your kitchen, talk to your design build company about your desire before choosing the cabinets and appliances. You should also consider the cost if your refrigerator or dishwasher needs replacing. In that case, you’ll need to purchase a new overlay or integrated appliance depending on the option you originally chose. These are more expensive than a standard appliance. Lastly, consider your household. When wood is exposed to moisture, it can warp or split. If your family is notorious for opening the refrigerator with wet hands, you may want to stick with traditional appliances.
